Sena’s Rahul Patil held after video of follower firing shots goes viral | Mumbai News


Shiv Sena’s Rahul Patil — one of the two persons who had been injured after BJP MLA Ganpat Gaikwad fired at Shiv Sena leader Mahesh Gaikwad inside the Ulhas Nagar police station on February 2 — was arrested by Navi Mumbai police on Friday after a video of one of his followers firing in the air went viral on social media.

The police said that the firing incident took place after a fight broke out between two groups of people at Dugi village in Panvel. “A bullock cart race was organised on March 12 at an open space at Dugi village in Panvel. The two carts belonged to Rahul Patil and Jayesh Patil,” said a police officer. However Rahul Patil’s bullock cart lost the race, and people from jayesh Patil’s group started to celebrate.

“As it did not go down well with Rahul Patil, he brought his followers to the ground and a fight ensued between the two groups. During this, one of Rahul’s followers allegedly took out a weapon and fired a round to scare the rivals,” an officer said.

The video of the firing incident was subsequently shared on social media.

When it was brought to the notice of the Navi Mumbai Police, a case was registered under relevant sections pertaining to assembling illegally and firing gunshots under the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act.

The police said Rahul Patil was subsequently traced and arrested by Panvel City police.

Senior police inspector Nitin Thakre confirmed Patil’s arrest and said, “We are trying to trace others too.”

Rahul Patil is known for bullock cart racing as he was part of another firing incident in 2022 at Anandnagar industrial estate in Ambernath. The icident took place after a dispute erupted between the two groups over a bullock cart race.
