Former Bayern Munich boss emerges as a shock candidate for Liverpool job after London meeting

A surprise candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp has emerged.

A former Bayern Munich manager has emerged as a surprise candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool after meetings were held.

As the 2023-24 Premier League season nears its dramatic conclusion, Liverpool are busy making preparations for the post-Jurgen Klopp era at Anfield.

Back in January Klopp announced that he will step down as manager at the end of the current campaign, bringing an end to his nine-year spell at the club.

Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim is the hot favourite to replace the German, but earlier this week he was forced to deny widespread reports that he has agreed to join Liverpool for next season.

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool have not begun any formal negotiations with candidates and are currently conducting a ‘robust research process’ in order to collect information and data on the top options.

And it could be that an unlikely name is on the list of Klopp replacements.

The Mail has reported that former Bayern Munich boss Niko Kovac could be in the frame after leaving Wolfsburg earlier this season.

Representatives of the former Croatia midfielder have reportedly been in London this week to speak to a number of Premier League clubs ahead of potential managerial vacancies this summer.

The 52-year-old led Eintracht Frankfurt to the German cup in his first club management role, before leading Bayern to a league and cup double during his sole season in charge in 2018-19.

He coached Ligue 1 side Monaco between 2020 and 2022, before joining Wolfsburg ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.

Kovac was dismissed by Wolfsburg last month with the Bundesliga side sitting precariously above the relegation zone.

A number of Bundesliga clubs are reportedly interested in hiring Kovac, though if Liverpool decide they want him they will be confident of convincing him to move to the Premier League.
