Jontay Porter stats: Explaining March 20 game at center of lifetime ban

The NBA banned Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter for life Wednesday.

Porter isn’t a household name, unless you’re talking about his brother, Michael, who is a key piece for the defending champion Nuggets. Unlike Denver’s Porter, the former Raptors center had never been able to stick in the NBA.

He bounced around, only playing 37 NBA games in his career, but life comes at you fast.

One minute, you’re on top of the world playing at basketball’s highest level. The next, you’re a stain on the league and never welcomed back.

As Porter found out, sometimes you can fly too close to the sun. Following the league’s investigation, Porter can pinpoint the exact day that happened: March 20, 2024, which ultimately cost him a lifetime’s worth of work.

Jontay Porter March 20 game explained

The Raptors were no strangers to injuries in the 2023-24 season. That reality eventually led to the team signing Porter to a two-way deal on Dec. 8, 2023. He would go on to play in 26 games and start in five prior to Wednesday’s announcement.

Those injuries, specifically to Scottie Barnes and Chris Boucher, opened the door for Porter, who averaged 15.4 minutes per game in March. His role later increased to around 20 minutes per game, with the lone blemish being just a three minute stint on the floor on March 20.

Porter wasn’t starting, but sportsbooks often list players that are going to have a role in the game each night. Thanks to his increased presence on the floor, Porter’s odds weren’t hard to come by anymore.

As the only true center left on the depth chart, it wasn’t a stretch to think that the former undrafted free agent wouldn’t be a big part of the game plan.

With 2:43 remaining in the opening quarter, Porter checked in for Gary Trent Jr. as the Kings held a 27-21 lead. He was fairly active before the quarter ended, collecting two offensive rebounds and missing his only shot attempt.

NBA rotations typically mean you’ll see those bench players start the second quarter, but Porter was noticeably absent this time around. Anyone who has ever bet on an NBA game knows that usually isn’t a good sign. Then came the dreaded update from Underdog’s NBA account.

The Kings would go on to dominate the glass all night long, out-rebounding the Raptors by a 53-31 margin, including a 18-11 offensive rebound advantage, en route to a 34-point victory.

Porter was done for the day, and it wasn’t the first time this season he left a game for a curious reason. This time around, however, there was suspicious activity that was flagged.

DraftKings Sportsbook said that Porter’s props resulted in the most winnings for the NBA that night. An NBA investigation later discovered that Porter, “disclosed confidential information about his own health status to an individual he knew to be an NBA bettor,” ahead of the March 20 game. That bettor placed an $80,000 player prop parlay to win $1.1 million, wagering that Porter would underperform in that game.

“The league’s investigation also found that Porter limited his own game participation to influence the outcome of one or more bets on his performance in at least one Raptors game,” the league added.

Porter would play one final time in the NBA on March 22, which was a noticeable improvement from his previous outing. He would go on to play 21 minutes and finish with seven points, three rebounds and eight assists.
