Klay Thompson stats vs. Kings: Warriors star blanked in potential final game with Golden State

The Warriors endured a rough 2023-24 NBA season but hoped that things would come together enough to make a postseason run.

Instead, Golden State couldn’t even make the NBA playoffs. The 10th-seeded Warriors were blown out 118-94 in the first round of the NBA Play-In Tournament by the Kings, ending their chances to compete for another NBA title.

Golden State’s offense struggled throughout the contest, shooting a below-average 41.3 percent from the field. The starting lineup couldn’t score consistently, as the unit had just 48 combined points.

Klay Thompson played a significant role in the Warriors’ scoring issues. The five-time All-Star had one of his worst games of the season in the Play-In Tournament, and the rest of Golden State’s team couldn’t step up enough to help him overcome a cold shooting night.

Here’s what to know about Thompson’s performance against the Kings in what may have been his final game as a Warrior.

How many points did Klay Thompson have vs. Kings?

It marked just his second scoreless outing of the season; the other came when he played just under two minutes against the Timberwolves in November before being ejected after a scuffle involving himself, Draymond Green and Jaden McDaniels.

Thompson was held scoreless three times during his NBA career before the 2023-24 season. All came during his rookie year in games where he played less than 12 minutes.

Thompson entered Tuesday’s game averaging 17.9 points per game for the season and 19.6 points per game during his career.

Where is Klay Thompson going?

Thompson might not be going anywhere. The Warriors have repeatedly expressed a desire to retain Curry’s backcourt-mate, and coach Steve Kerr reiterated that Golden State wants Thompson after its loss.

“We need Klay back,” Kerr told reporters Tuesday. “I know he had a tough night tonight, but what he represents for us — the spacing — we’re not a deep shooting team. We’re a little top-heavy. Klay’s presence means so much to the spacing of the floor, to the flow of the offense.

“He’s still got good years left. And I know I speak for everyone in the organization: We want him back. Obviously, there’s business at hand, and that has to be addressed … What Klay has meant to this franchise, as good he still is, we desperately want him back.”

The Warriors may have competition for Thompson’s services. The sharpshooter is expected to draw interest from the Orlando Magic, among other teams with the money to pursue a shooting guard upgrade in free agency.
